Having just finished ficcing about her, I'm curious to know what others think about Tom Riddle's mother. I performed a couple of quick searches on "Tom's mom," "mother of Tom Riddle," "Marvolos" and so on, and didn't find anything whatsoever.
I want to know who the Marvolos were. (Assuming that this was their family name and not Tom's grandfather's given name. That would be too horrible to think about.)
mctabby's famous
Two Worlds And In Between goes a very long way satisfying that in all its glorious (if incomplete) fabulosity. So how were they treated in the Wizarding World, direct descendants of Slytherin?
Were they a superior version of the Malfoys or Blacks - assuming, fairly, that the Malfoys/Blacks weren't at the top of the Slytherin rung because they weren't as pure as the purest? The dark hair and general niceness of features is perhaps a genetic clue to a Black-Marvolo link. Were they wildly different, existing in, to use Edith Wharton's term, "a kind of super-terrestrial twilight"? I'd like to see an eccentric, rarefied family in the middle of unplottable nowhere, doused in the most arcane forms of magic, of a place and time where good and evil are hardly a matter of difference? How did it affect Hogwarts, or the Wizarding World at large, having the direct descendants of a Founder in their midst?
I'm suppose there is the fact that if they were really important we'd have heard of them already. On the other hand, JKR might be reserving information for later. We've heard of the Blacks, perhaps the "pure without having to think about it" Marvolos are up next. On the other other hand - they might really have been like the Van Der Luydens, so exclusive that they breathed a different air.
So if the pureblood Death Eaters know about Tom's half-bloodedness, and still follow him - they must have good reason. Which is, of course, that the line of Slytherin commands them.
I have a craving for more Marvolo fic. And about Tom's mother in particular.
Any thoughts on this? Fic, art, ideas? Past discussions I could be pointed to?
