Today was quite fortuitous. I had the breakfast special at Dottie's -- a frittata with feta cheese, spinach, grape tomatoes, eggplant, and scallions. SO YUMMY. I couldn't finish my home fries or toast, it was so filling. Then espresso at Blue Bottle, and off to Berkeley ( Read more... )

I think Michel Gondry was deliberately trying to make his leads look less like "movie people" and more like actual endearing misfits. Hence the bad haircut.

I liked the movie, but I was disappointed with the ending -- the plot in general, really. My roommate (who lived in Lyons for a year) tells me that the boy-man who never grows up has been a frequent hero in recent French cinema.

I need to watch it again to really judge what I think. I didn't like the ending at first, but upon thinking about it more, I think I did like it after all. I think the point is that by the end of the movie, you've completely given up on the main character's narrative, because things are happening that are totally contrary to it. So he's his own worst enemy. I think the moment he sees the boat by her bed really solidifies it, but it's too late, because he's leaving. That moment of realization is the end of the movie. Understated, but good.
