Okay, so it seems everybody I know either liked the movie or loved the movie, and most seem willing to overlook "a few flaws" just for the sake of having another chapter in the well-worn franchise. ( Here there be spoilers... )

Not that you were necessarily directing that at me (I'm not that ego-centric!), but I feel compelled to respond. I'm willing to overlook the flaws not because I desperately wanted another chapter of Trek no matter what -- in fact, I had no enthusiasm about this film for the last 1.5-2 years while it was in production. (Yeah, that was a popular opinion among my fellow Trek authors -- not!) I only became interested after I started seeing the trailers because it looked like fun. And I would certainly not be able to dredge up enthusiasm about a new television series unless I was seriously convinced it was going to be different than what we've seen on TV so far. Not all Trek fans exhibit plain dumb loyalty. ;-)
I'm willing to overlook the flaws (and yes, they were definitely there) because I was vastly entertained, for the most part by the performances.
...you probably think this post is about you... ;-)
Yes, because I was in rant mode, I failed to mention that there were some good performances, and I did enjoy some of the humor. Karl Urban was great as Bones McCoy, and I thoroughly enjoyed Zachary Quinto's Spock and Simon Pegg as Scotty. It was hard to judge Chris Pine's Kirk because I felt he had so little to work with. And Winona Ryder just mailed it in.
The possibility of a new series is truly a scary thing to me. The resumes of the people behind this movie are filled with primarily television experience, and these folks are capable of producing a truly crappy series unless they get some help.

Me too!
I don't think there will be a new series in the immediate near future (5 years?) I highly doubt this new movie crew would be remotely interested, since actors with established film careers are often uninterested in television shows.
And I hope the PTB realize that a new TV series now would be extremely premature. They really need to wait until they have something new to say.
