2011-2012 Season Wrap-Ups, part four: Revenge

On the bright side, the new windows arrived today and are shiny and beautiful. They don't get installed until Friday -- and that will doubtless be a nightmare for many people, and in particular a nightmare for two small furry creatures who are going to be spending the installation time locked in a bathroom (mostly because one small furry creature ( Read more... )

Monte Cristo was the basic inspiration for the series -- the guys at the bar are more or less inspired by the Morrels, complete with pretty pathetic Teenage First Love (although the girl isn't as insipid or perfect as Valentine); Conrad Grayson was more or less inspired by Baron Danglars except he's possibly even MORE SLIMY (granted this is debatable) and his daughter is the Valentine character. The Abbe Faria character has been more or less transmuted into a superwealthy Japanese martial arts expert (also awesome although he's not killing enough people, sniffle) and so on.

With that said, they've definitely moved on past those original inspirations and after some initial nods to the book, by mid season the show isn't much like the book.

And yeah, it's surprisingly awesome. I mean, I feel terribly guilty about watching it, but it's just so perfectly over the top and cathartic at the same time.

Yes, better to watch out when wishing for dogs to appear in this series. I always hate it when I'm watching a Glenn Close movie or show and an animal appears.

Yes, this show surprised me completely, too. Or rather, my interest in watching it surprised me completely. I watched the pilot out of professional loyalty and then watched the rest like a junkie mainlining some craptastic nirvana.

It works entirely because they know they're already over the top and yet they insist on trying to fly a little higher each time. :)

I agree about the pilot, but short of sending all of this seasons' deceased actors out into our homes to beat us over the head with rolled up newspapers, what were they supposed to do?

I'm really shocked at how addicted I got -- it's the only show I ended up watching live on a regular basis, just to find out what happened next.

I do have to admit that I cracked up with Amily showed up with the Fake Pregnancy...or maybe not fake pregnancy, whatever...the actress was clearly not pregnant despite the nice faked pillow, so it made me laugh, even though this was supposed to be a Poignant Moment, just because it was so obviously soapish and over the top. But Victoria's bit with the engagement present, which was TOTALLY AWESOME completely made up for that bit.

Ooh, shiny new windows. I will need some too, as a couple of them cannot be opened.

In our case one of ours couldn't be closed, so, new windows. I'm particularly pleased with the one that will be going in the dinette area -- fewer bars across the window area so a much improved view of the back.
