Captain Marvel is woman? Sorry but I'm not a comic fan so it surprised me.

Yep. Or rather -- because you can't ever make an unqualified statement in comics -- the current Captain Marvel in the main Marvel Comics universe is a woman. Other characters, both male and female, have been Captain Marvel in the past.
