Yes! Teach me things.

Also, do you have a favorite book on Balkan history? I tried Balkan Ghosts on my way over there and didn't really get into it. Maybe I should try again, but I'd love any other suggestions you've got. I'm mostly interested in the last century, but I know all the things they're ever mad about go back a billion years or so...

you don't sing in an arty rock band, do you? i saw someone who looked kinda like you last week maria_sputnik September 12 2008, 23:18:26 UTC
My half-baked opinion is that that Balkan Ghosts guy is talking out his ass. I feel like he's one of the prime instigators of some of the most bullshit memes about those wars ("who can understand those people, they've been having incomprehensible blood feuds for countless centuries," as if that explained the most recent wars, voila!, as if every other country in Europe hasn't been engaged in tribal wars for countless centuries, I'm looking at YOU England, Germany, France).

My favorite book about the last century is an out-of-print book called A Paper House, which is really easy to read and gives quite a bit of information in a digestible form. The writer was a London paper's Slovenia correspondent for a long time before the war broke out, and he wrote the book before the war got into full swing, so it's...calmer than a lot of other recent books ( ... )

You know what? This is crazy, but I think maybe I know Lisa. Did she go to UW? Did she study with a Serbian guy named Bojan? If so, I met her on a bus to Belgrade and ran into her on Mississippi Ave. one time.

Either way, I'll totally take you up on that movie. It looks really interesting, plus my roommate's out of town for two weeks so social interaction is a good thing.

And that's kind of good to hear about Balkan Ghosts. It came recommended by someone I admire quite a bit, so I felt guilty/maybe too stupid when I wasn't impressed. That being said, I guess I did absorb the age-old tribal war thing from the one chapter I read... heh. I'll check out those others. Thanks!

that sounds like her! is it really possible that there are five billion people in the world? i only seem to run into about eight hundred of them.

the movie's playing at nine, i think the director's gonna be in attendance, i'll tell you in advance that this same production company made "bringing down a dictator" about serbia's bulldozer revolution and they are in my opinion talented and entertaining propagandists. (it's also possible there will be serbian revolutionaries in the audience.)
