I think this is a case of his problem rather than yours. I don't know if there is a way to avoid it and it seems like he's the one who owes you an apology. That was remarkably rude.

Maybe just let it slide, he is who he is and work's kicking his ass right now? You know, not worry about it or overreact?

Oh, I know it's kicking his ass, and I'm happy to let it slide. It's more a commentary on how lousy I am at office politics, and am wondering if/how I get better at it.
