I've found the easiest thing to do is give out gift cards to a store or place that I know my family needs something from. For example, like for Dad, I give him either Lowes or Office Depot, for Eric, depending on his projects or current interests, Lowes or Barnes-n-Noble, for Carolyn, I always pick a nice resturant so that she can take Eric out on a date and they can enjoy a nice dinner together.

Well, it's not even that. I just don't like giving out presents for some random not-particularly-good religious reason. Not my thing. I'm much better at picking birthday gifts, because they are so much more personal.

That's understandable. Dad always gives us money because he knows we could always use it and we find the things we need ourselves so he doesn't have to shop. He hates shopping and xmas with a major passion which is why we always take a family trip together. It brings us together for a time and we dont have to follow the xmas traditions like everyone else. We be our own people and I've really enjoyed the past 5 years of doing this. Big problem is the very traditional, highly family oriented Aunt who thinks because we are her "blood relatives" it is our absolute "DUTY!!!" as such to come and visit her in PA and have a "traditional" family christmas like we've done for the past "30 odd years". BS I say, but it's really stressful getting my butt chewed off by her when ever she calls about us coming up to visit. This year I dont know if I will go on the family trip due to my going to florida and budget restraints but I hope we at least get to spend on day together and have a nice dinner and hang out together.

Get the city inspector in there and file a formal complaint.

The rent money then goes to the city escrow account and not the landlord until the situation is rectified.

Big motivator.

Can't do the escrow thing in NC, I don't think, but there are other ways to do it. Good idea - I'm definitely going this route if this next visit doesn't fix it (and the next bill is this bad).

I'm not an Xmas fan either. I really only like it at the very last minute. If it were up to me, I'd never shop before Xmas eve. I do like 12th Night - so I think my Xmas spirit is just offset from the rest of the world.

The SCA Politics are really getting me down too. Luckily, I'm not in any orders, but all my friends who are, are very up in arms and getting burned out by it all... and I really hate it when my friends get crispy. The whole thing makes me want to rip up all the policy and start over from scratch.
