Bring me the head of Dan Didio!

Mar 10, 2007 15:08

Newsarama reports the following from Wonder Con: There are no plans to put a memorial for Stephanie Brown in the Batcave, Didio said, noting that she became Robin out of her own resort, was never accepted into the full role and Bat-family, and died as Spoiler, not as Robin.

It's amazing how hard the PTB of comics will cling to a false interpretation of their own canon just to keep from admitting they've made a mistake. Stephanie was a Robin. Piotr didn't try to kill Wisdom. Sigh. If one of Us won the lottery and bought out Marvel or DC....

Somewhere in my random lurkings, I saw somebody making the arguement that the guys in charge of the comics now, were reading comics when the 'jackass antihero' was popular. I have to say it explains a lot of what they've been doing to iconic characters like Batman and Iron Man....

That makes sense. I hate hate hate what they've done with Batman. He's always been my favorite, but he's gone from being this guy with serious issues who's trying to do the right thing as he sees it to an overly violent, borderline insane jackass and that just didn't work for me. Hence, I haven't seriously followed a Batman title since the end of the Brubaker/McDonald run on Batman. Hopefully the trend will swing back to a more centered approach someday and I'll start reading again.

Stuff like this is why I've completely given up on comics. I still buy the occasional gn or tpb, but I have no interest in following a regular monthly title. Seems like the writers are only interested in telling the story they want to tell at the moment. And if some pesky past events screw with that...well, we'll just ignore them, or at best ret-con it all later.

I know that the massive ret-cons and contradictory canons are part of the, uh, charm of comics. But it's one thing to randomly decide that the villain you killed six months back was just a clone and the real one is still out there and another thing entirely to ignore the essence of your characters.

Rant away, because I totally agree with you. As you say, retcons are just one of those things you have to deal with if you read comics. Same with reboots, but to have Batman not mourn and honor a dead Robin...is unforgivable.

If Captian American were alive this wouldn't happen!

**bows head**

Sorry Marvel fan here just had to comment with our latest news. I've not follwed DC since the mid '70s but Kiddo's read all my DC stuff from mid sixtys to 70's...

Comic corps just don't get how OCC they make their main characters at times...

I was very sad to hear about Captain America too. ::sniff::

Seriously, it's like they don't care at all about the core values of the characters.

Answer is they don't care they are out for max sales and franchises not consistant characters with development, depth or meaning. Thus we get all kinds of crap art and writing and OCC actions because they seem cool at the moment and might lift sales for a bit...

Maybe Steph and Cap should team up in their own story - the crossover neither Marvel nor DC wants you to have...

That's the thing that gets me! He didn't even have to say anything! He didn't have to justify it, he could have just kept his mouth shut and NOT be an asshole.

I know! If he'd just said "We have no plans to put a case for her in the Batcave," then it would have been status quo. Annoying, but nothing new. But no, he had to say, "We're not going to put a memorial in the Cave because she's an icky girl. Yuck!"

That must have been the part I missed at the con when we were at the D.C. panel (Sophie decided that she wanted out of the stroller so I took her for a walk.) If I had heard it, the sound of me sputtering in rage would have filled the room and the husband would have had to hold me back.

I'm glad you missed it, because it would have taken time to scrape up the money to bail you out when you leapt on stage and throttled the moron. ::coughs::

Can you believe the nerve? "We're not giving her a memorial because she wasn't really Robin. I mean, yeah, Batman trained her and gave her a uniform and stuff, but that doesn't make her Robin. Now, if she'd had a penis..."

I asked the question during the Friday panel, not the Saturday one.

I was tempted to ask that question again at Saturday's panel but it conflicted with another panel I wanted to see.

However, if you, too, should be going to SDCC, drop me a line.
