Williamsburg people should all go to the Global Bazaar this Saturday, 11/12, from 3-6 in the Crim Dell meadow. It's a carnivalish event with everything from kosher hot dogs to shisha to belly dancing, and all money raised goes towards UNICEF for relief of the devastation caused by the earthquake in Asia and the hurricanes in central America ( Read more... )

My thoughts;

How come the only religious people represented in the media are totally crazy? Jeeze...

That thing on the Palestinian kid kind of sickened me...it's like "even though our soldiers are going to keep killing you, you can give us your organs and it will promote world peace and we can use it for PR"

And on the Jews being smarter thing...why didn't they do some 'study' concerning some other stereotype not so positive like "why are jews bad dancers"...sheesh

I think my commentary on the article about the Palestinian kid is right on. An Israeli politican comments in the article about how 'remarkable' the gesture is...which might have led to the article being written in the first place. Just because it isn't Israeli press doesn't mean that Israel's PR isn't at work.

Furthermore, the kid who was killed was 12 and shot in the head for throwing rocks and having a toy gun. It wasn't a civilian being used as a human shield. It was also in Jenin in the West Bank, land that the Israelis technically shouldn't be in to 'hunt militants', at least according to International Law. Instead of focuing on the fact that the kid shouldn't have been shot in the first place, it focuses on the act of goodwill as a means for peace - but really, as long as Israeli kids and Palestinian kids keep on getting killed, the possibilities for peace are pretty limited. I just found the article tasteless.

The kid who was killed, by throwing stones, made it impossible for the soldiers to get through to murderes ("militants"). He was a civilian who could have killed anyone who got in the path of the stones he threw. That makes him a civilian shield ( ... )

I'm not entirely familiar with the Supreme Court decision that the Senate amendment is seeking to "overrule" ... but if the decision involved a constitutional question, then the amendment is probably gonna get axed eventually. It's already been established that, when the Court decides a constitutional matter, Congress doesn't get to pass a law to "overrule" the decision. Dickerson v. United States (2000).

But, of course, a challenge to the amendment would have to work its way up to the Supreme Court before the amendment could get axed - and goodness knows how long that would take.
