Yes, I do paint portraits from photos. There's a few currently posted to my LJ. I mainly use my LJ to post my fine art and about half of the entries are Friends-only.
The "Green Goddess" piece is basically a portrait -- it was taken from a fifty-year-old B&W photo of an anonymous pin-up girl. This piece was painted in acrylics over a 2-day period and I was very happy with how her face turned out.
The Arnold Swarzchenegger painting was taken from several different photos, combining old B&W male body-building photos with Arnold's infamous nude 1970s photo and a head-shot from Arnold's 2003 campaign PR material.
The two pastel portraits posted back in June 2003 are also taken from photographs. The green woman with the red hair was drawn from a tiny LJ icon (see my actual LJ entry where I posted the original photo). The young girl in the pink sweater was taken from a photograph that I took myself (at the time, the girl wasn't even aware at the time that I had taken her photo).
I forgot how much I love portraits until I saw this one. I meant to comment on it when you first posted it, but my comment got lost somewhere along the way. Anyway, this portrait is very striking... I guess that's the best word I can use for it because I was "struck" by it: By the realism, by the beauty in the subject (particularly his eyes) and by the simplicity of the subject. If I could stop gushing over it, I'd know better what to say. ;)
Thank you for your kind words. :=) I've had other people comment about his eyes, too. The day I painted the final touches on his eyes, Daniel was very sad because I wouldn't allow him to listen to his boombox in class. ;=)
BTW, I checked out your web site and I really liked the B&W photos you used for the site, as well as your paper collage work. Very nice! I think I added you to my Friends List because you wrote some HP fanfics I liked, but I'm not sure any more.
