A few people may have seen this already, but I finally got around to re-scanning this piece. This portrait was painted a couple of years ago in a portrait painting class. Oils on a 18x24 inch canvas, painted from a live model, over five sessions, taking around 14 hours total time to complete. No photo references were used, although I did take some reference shots for posterity.
The model had "lazy eye" in his left eye. After the portrait was completed, the teacher took me to task for painting his left eye "incorrectly" (not symmetrically with the right eye), so I checked my photographs and sure enough, he did have lazy eye. The teacher was kind of irritated with me after that and we eventually parted on bad terms.
I was always particularly happy with how Daniel's face and hair turned out. Here's a close-up. The scans still seem slightly too dark.
