I was playing Runescape for a little while this evening, when some teenagers in a dungeon I was fighting wanted to chitchat.

They totally freaked to find out I was a MOM who played video games. Apparently their moms think these are evil. What's more, I had to tell them that MY MOTHER plays video games. In fact, she's been working on Baldur's ( Read more... )

I bet if people knew how many older people played these things, they would be totally floored.
We're not supposed to play video games if we're over 30. People over 30 are supposed to complain about their kids playing videogames.
I never got the hang of this "over 30 thingy".

My mom's 63. Of course, we're a geek family. I guess that would change the rules some for us.

*LOL* Why should there be a rule that says older people can't play video games?
I guess I must enjoy breaking rules (or make my own).

Isn't the average age of gamers about 35 anyway?

My mom plays video games, too. I remember when I was a teenager and had friends over for visit - they were always shocked when they saw her playing video games. But I guess they just thought I had the coolest mom ever, too :P None of them could ever imagine their mom playing games like that...

From its forums, World of Warcraft seems to pull a decent share of moms, wives, girlfriends, and even grandmoms. Though like Runescape, it's certainly the exception rather than the rule. Hell, even just being female: it's generally assumed that female or male avatar, you're a guy.

As for hitting on avatars, WoW has its own phenomenon in the form of the female Night Elf characters. It's nigh impossible to wander around any Alliance territory for too long with out running into one stripped of her clothes, dancing on a mailbox or something. The other faction, Horde, has so far managed to steer clear of this since they have no convetionally "attractive" race. Unfortunately, that'll end with the expansion when we get the Blonde Ambition equivalent to the Night Elves, the Blood Elves.

But as for motives, my only guess is that despite WoW's cartoonish animation, the world is absorbing enough to allow suspension of disbelief. Well, that or some people just don't have a life.
