Shabbos menu for this week

Nov 04, 2009 16:21

My mother appeared at my door today  with a huge shopping bag, stuffed to the brim with swiss chard from her garden. That, combined with the fact that ground beef was on tremendous sale today helped me decide what we're having for shabbos.

Homemade herbed challah

Fish souffle (my made up recipe with tuna, eggs, flour, and onion.)

Your shabbos meals always sound so delicious. I love how you can make such feasts out of what you have on hand.

Thank you! Its an art to make good food with what is on hand. You're welcome to join us for a meal if you're ever in the area. ;)
There's a joke going around that people make as elaborate shabbos meals every week as others make just on christmas and thanksgiving... and then when the holidays come around, you can have as many as 8 feasts in a two week period...
(We have meals both friday night and saturday afternoon. I just don't vary my menu and serve the same friday night and saturday afternoon generally.)

My first thought - YUM! I love swiss chard.
Next thought - OY all that checking.
But it's worth it! :)
Sounds delicious.

Checking for bugs itself didnt take so long. It took a while start to finish if you count the soaking time, but because they were large leaves, they were easier to check once soaked. Took me less than 20 minutes to check a whole big shopping bag full.

I actually make an herbed bread and am serving it as challah this week. Simple white bread recipe, knead into it fresh minced garlic, dried onion flakes, rosemary, basil, oregano, parsley, and dill.
It tastes heavenly!
