I was about to kill some people yesterday (because you all know it's possible to stab someone in the face over the internet) but then my friend Ed reminded me of this: "People are assholes on the internet because they think their anonymity gives them the right to do so. Half the shit people say on the internet they'd never say in real life because ( Read more... )

That icon is awesome.

I also encourage such research.

I should probably include the context of that research quote, but it's so much better without context. :-p

Also, this post at Shakesville may be relevant to your interests. Being that silence IS the enemy and all.

You know, I really like Shakesville. They've had some damn good posts over there. Thanks for that link. Awesome story.

People do seem to find 'courage' in the fact no one can see them on the internet. Sad but true, though it hasn't stopped me from feeling quite the same way you did

Someone I know is going through a breakup, and they were posting about it (not just dating, an actual marriage, so it's really tough) and she said something about wanting to go back to using drugs again and fighting the urge by smoking cigarettes, and I made a joke about how I was eating ice cream to fight off my urges, and some know-it-all fuckwad actually posted to "correct me" about how sugar can produce the same feelings as alcohol, and it's not ok to self-medicate anyway, and making excuses like this is addictive behavior, etc. I spent all night trying to keep myself off the internet so as to avoid starting world war three in her journal.

I'm sorry you've had run-ins with those who wallow in their moronitude. Such people would benefit from the kind of research I mentioned above. :-p

Yes, like Pixie, I fully support that method of research :)

Wow, people really suck at picking up on humor don't they? Damn. Sorry for your friend, poor thing. Ice cream is all kinds of win though so she should definitely consider it ;)

The ice cream i have is all natural, so it's health food, right? :-p I'm going to try every flavor at some point. I love the ones I have tried. I've never liked ice cream before, so this is a new one for me.

People seem to seek me out and "correct" my comments a lot, and I wonder at the arrogance it takes to do that, even if you're well meaning. I personally don't troll around my friend's journals looking for people I disagree with so I can "educate" them, but that's me.
