Lateral in-Flexion

I have been advised, after the ride, to practise lots of lateral flexion with Katana. Given, and I quote others, this is a 'boss' mare, getting on top of her, without kirbing her enthusiasms, is and will be a good thing. I agree. I have a cracking horse, whose nature is good, but if she gets the upper hand, it isn't a case of getting away with it, ( Read more... )

Putting her in positions where she has to figure things out for herself is also a good thing as well. I know some people are not fond of bitting a horse up, but if you do it in such a manner that the horse learns to give to pressure, then balance themselves over poles or fences or other obstacles on their own...well, it's a very useful technique. That's one of those "learn for themselves" tricks.

Cones and poles and small obstacles are also good for a mare like this. Work it up so that she has to figure out the puzzle for herself. That can really get them engaged.

Thank you. Yes, some good ideas there. It's interesting, too, for me, because when I ride her alone and the other horse is hollering and she's wanting back to him, I have ridden her along lines of trees, in and out etc, which did totally engage her to forget about Sabre hollering. So I can see puzzles working for her very well.
