Something had been niggling at the back of Cloud's mind for some time now, but he'd been too absorbed in other thoughts to notice. Thoughts of his sword, thoughts of Zack's sword, thoughts of Aeris and Tifa and everything else. Even thoughts about Yuffie ( Read more... )

One thing about best friends, even ones who remembered you from ages ago when you were a happy-go-lucky kid, was that they could always be counted on to hear the last thing you really wanted them to hear. Such as off-handed comments about missing your birthday.

"Missed a birthday, huh?" It wasn't a question. "I'd suggest we should through you a party, but you don't like those."

Zack had always liked Cloud, but it was more than that. He really thought of him as something of a younger brother more than just a friend. It probably had to do with Cloud's interest in joining SOLDIER. And SOLDIER was Zack's family. It occurred to him that Cloud was probably older than him now.

Cloud turned and gave Zack a Look. He wondered if the other man had been following him, but Zack wouldn't be so quiet about it if he had.

"No party," he said firmly. "And don't tell anyone. If Yuffie or Aeris hears about this, they'll insist on it." He was surprised they hadn't already. He couldn't say everyone else forgetting his birthday hurt, but it was...a bit of a wake-up call, he supposed.

Time kept happening even if he didn't pay attention to it. That was...good, he supposed.

Zack hadn't exactly been stalking Cloud, rather he'd been following from a distance in an attempt to catch up to him.

"Sure," he agreed with a shrug. "It's your birthday."

"Was," Cloud corrected. "A month ago."

An almost-smirk tugged at a corner of his mouth. "I'm older than you, you know."
