“Star light, star bright…Wait, is that too cliché?” Ryan thought.

He always knew when the rain dries up, it gives you a sunny day. He loved the night time and thought that anything can happen just by looking up at the shiny glitter exploding into his eyes. He’s not quite sure of what it is; from the glistening stars to the darkened color of the night, it seemed simple to him but also magical.

But this was the day after he drove himself crazy by thinking too much and Ryan knew that it was time to let go. Years ago, his mother used to tell him the classic quote, “When you’re at a hard time in your life, don’t get scared of listening to your heart.” This is real, this is taking a chance, and Ryan was now itching to experiment and experience with it all.

This is me understanding myself in the open world. I’m going into the revolution. I am the battle. No one can stop me now. I’m stronger, confident than I’ll ever be, and if you just understand that, you truly believe in me.

Ryan wanted to celebrate. He wanted more encouragement to know that he could do this. Looking outside of his bedroom window, he placed the bookmark between the two pages that he was reading and got up. He walked over to the window and saw the glowing moonlight seep into the glass. It was sincere beauty and he wanted to share it with the rest of the galaxy and the air around him.

Excitement flowed through his bones and walked to his closet. Way in the back, a black reflective telescope was hidden and Ryan pulled it out slowly and carefully. He cleaned the dust off of it and looked brand new; just like when he got it.

Ryan placed the telescope on the stand and walked into the kitchen. He prepared a mug of hot chocolate with extra mini marshmallows and brought it outside on the front porch. Walking back into his room, he carefully took the telescope off of the stand and brought them both outside. He was set up in a matter of minutes and thought about sipping the hot chocolate, but he made it too hot for his taste.

Soon enough, his eye looked into the lens and felt just as amazed as when he first looked into them.

It was a quiet night and almost pitch black with every door light shining in the darkness. Ryan lost track of time gazing up when he heard a door close and soft footsteps. He looked up from the constellation and saw Brendon walking with a bag of trash. Ryan’s eyes followed Brendon as he walked to the garbage barrels, placed the bag inside, closed the lid and started to walk back. Right when Brendon turned to walk back inside, Ryan looked into the telescope as usual.

He heard the door closing and gazed on Orion, one of his favorite of five constellations ever. The orchestra’s music played in his head, like any other and he smiled at the connection of the night.

The wind picked up making his hair sweep against his face and chills crawl up and down his spine. The music got louder and Ryan didn’t pay any attention to his surroundings except the sharp strings playing in his own imagination and the light shining into the lenses.
Ryan shivered and suddenly felt warmth and he smiled wider. He picked his head up and saw that amazing figure that was also looking content and happy.

“Brendon,” Ryan whispered, as the wind picked up again.

“Hi Ryan,” Brendon replied quietly, as he rubbed Ryan’s covered shoulders.

“What are you doing here?”

“It’s a nice night out and I don’t want to waste a great, late Saturday evening.”

“It’s really beautiful... Wanna take a look?”

“Sure!” Ryan moved away from the telescope and saw Brendon walking closer to it and looked through the eye piece. His smile was huge by the beautiful image, while Ryan walked over to the step to pick up the hot chocolate. Ryan straightened his torso, walked towards Brendon and stood next to him, looking at his strong back. He felt the urge to caress a hand over it, but instead he placed his other hand carefully on his back.

“Would you like some hot chocolate?” Ryan asked, with his arm stretched out. Brendon looked up, gazed into Ryan’s light eyes and nodded.

“Thanks,” Brendon said, as he took the mug from Ryan. He lifted it up to his lips and took a sip.

“That’s good,” giggled Brendon.

“Thanks,” Ryan smiled, as he sat down on the bottom step of his front porch. The other boy followed him and sat down next to him. He saw Ryan looking up at the sky and felt Brendon’s eyes on him.

“Was it hot enough?”

“I can drink it and not know the difference,” Brendon said, then drinking from the mug again. Ryan smiled and shared the blanket with the figure beside him, making both of them smiling wider. Ryan thought Brendon could tell the difference of the liquid, but the cold chill made him more complete anyway.

Life wasn't what it used to be.

Both of them shared each other’s body heat and Ryan felt like he was special and important for once. Maybe talking to him wasn’t so bad.

“Betelgeuse is shining more than I expected it to be and I lost count of the times I looked up at it,” Ryan said quietly.

“It suits the dark sky perfectly,” Brendon replied and looked up, seeing the thousands of stars above him.

“I love them. All of us are special, just like any shooting star.”

Both of the boys tilted their heads down and looked at each other, turning it into stares. Brendon’s smile appeared to show a genuine feeling, while Ryan’s glossy, honey eyes gazed into the chocolate ones in front of him.

“I’ve never seen eyes so clear and peaceful.”

He thought that Brendon was telling the truth by noticing the serious face. Ryan knew it came from the heart and he thought to himself that Brendon was a person to remember. He was like a gem that Ryan needed to open and to cherish it forever.

Ryan wasn’t sure if it was the astronomy controlling his brain, but he found his forehead leaning on Brendon’s warm shoulder. He lifted his head after a while and blinked his eyes to the view of Brendon’s neck, making his orbs looking at his entire face. It glowed just as brilliantly as the moon and smiled to himself. Ryan felt Brendon’s arm wrapping around him and the familiar blanket. He felt content, safe and serene. He knew that this friendship was getting off to a good start and felt like he really could do anything.

Brendon is a friend. I hope we can be more than that one day and share affection towards each other, while seeing the beauty of life around us.
