Personally, I was really unimpressed with The Bell Jar. Maybe it's just because I can't bear any more of those emotionally deadened characters, but it just didn't hold my attention at all, so I didn't get very far with it. I also was a bit letdown by Bastard Out of Carolina but that wasn't really so much to do the writing itself )which was just fine) but the way the author chose to deal with one part of the end of the book. I don't want to be spoiler-y I'll just say I didn't care for it at all.
The Color Purple is an amazing read, though. I think you'd really enjoy it. Same with One Hundred Years of Solitude.
Man, I so seriously wish my school had had assigned reading like that. lol I think I read a total of two good books for my English classes in all my time in school.
But to the point, I love Roald Dahl... I can appreciate that you don't, but I grew up with his books so I've always loved them. They're a bit quirky though, I think it's one of those love/hate things, really.
Catch 22 and Gone with the Wind are absolutely brilliant; I was floored by the former and did nothing but read the latter until I was done -- literally, two straight days of nothing but reading. The Giver is one of my favourite books from childhood, and I think I'm the only person who loved The Scarlet Letter. :| And Plath! Although I think everything Plath wrote pales in comparison to her journals ... I liked The Bell Jar and found it a good read, but I can't say I loved it.
Grapes of Wrath, personally, is the only Steinbeck I couldn't get through. I love love love his other books, but Grapes of Wrath ... I do want to reread it, though, because I adore his work. Ayn Rand I admit I have a personal vendetta against because The Fountainhead was freaking torture, and I hear Atlas Shrugged is even worse ... :|
lol you're not alone on not liking Dahl. I enjoyed Matilda, but I could never really get into him. I don't know why; I kind of like his ideas and what he tried to do; but that's ... all, if that
( ... )
I'm a bit distracted by some of these titles. Why the hell was Charlotte's Web banned? Or The Minpins? This must be a list of books that used to be banned, because most of these are fully accepted now, and it's missing the more recent books. But then, I've had my rant...
