There was a faint fragment of a tune scratching at Rue's brain. She could neither recognize it nor think of where she had heard it. It annoyed her; and Rue had been quite enough annoyed by everything that seemed to be happening.

So, to get her mind off of both music and everyone who seemed infuriatingly insistent on being irritating, she was quietly going over the note in her mind as she trailed after Mello, feeling uneasily like a lost puppy. The first and the last line, in particular. They're gone. Obviously not, assuming they might be the people now in the house; although, considering the apparent age of the note, that likely referred to something past.

Considering the evident stress during which the writer had penned the note, she distinctly hoped that he - or she - had been very right about the absence of whatever they were. But then one took into consideration the last line: Why won't it stop? That, Rue thought glumly, was just eerie. And depressing ( ... )

Mello turned to look at the girl for the first time since they had left the bathroom. "To the parlour at the end of the hallway," he answered bluntly. It was a pointless question; as far as he knew, there was hardly anywhere else they could have been going. The only other room in the direction that he'd been headed was the study. Did the girl really need a clarification between two options? It wasn't as though she wouldn't find out soon enough regardless.

Maybe she was just impatient. Mello couldn't deny that he was.

His impatience to get out of this place, though, was gradually becoming clouded over with a sick sense of dread. Something told him that he wouldn't be leaving this house any time soon ( ... )

"Are you sure?" Rue asked coolly. She paused, resting a hand against a closed door curiously. "Can you say for certain that the notes weren't there when you looked through? Perhaps you just weren't looking hard enough ( ... )

Mello took a moment to pause; there didn't appear to be anything terribly interesting about the tea tray. "I don't think so," he replied, his tone just short of snapping. "If you noticed, the notes weren't exactly very carefully hidden. The one behind the mirror... maybe. I could have missed that." He accidentally place a teacup he'd been holding back down a little bit too hard; it shattered upon impact with the table. "But there was another one right in the bathtub. I'm absolutely certain that I'd have noticed it when I bathed in there, you know."

He moved on to the fireplace near the table, peering over the mantle to look for anything that seemed like it might be even remotely noteworthy. Nothing was there, though, as far as he could see. Nothing except for that decorative ship in a bottle. That had been there the last time he'd checked.

Was it possible, though, that someone had hidden a note in it?

It was more than possible, at least ( ... )
