I hope my translation won't detract you from seeking his gems, because really they are very fascinating (don't let my hack job get in the way of your literary pursuits, so to speak

I remember struggling through most of... well... all of Toer's books. They are wonderful to read of course, but I find that I prefer shorter stories :) And pictures! With Calon Arang by Toer, I think I was helped by the fact that I've had prior knowledge about the story (from my childhood days etc), so it's half filling the gaps etc. But it's still a very looooong story to read through from beginning to end, I thought. I don't know if you've picked up the book about the same story by Toeti Heraty. It's a contemporary take on Calon Arang, with pretty pictures! Addressing not only gender struggles, but also about race relations (in this case Java and Bali) :) I think if I were to choose, I prefer the book by Mrs. Heraty (Calon Arang: the Story of a Woman Sacrificed to Patriarchy). But according to my friend, my preference is tinted by actually knowing the story beforehand (according to her, Mrs Heraty's book isn't as accessible if you don't know the story of Calon Arang
