Five thoughts after watching "The Doctor's Wife"

Sep 01, 2011 01:40

1) Neil Gaiman should write all the episodes.  It's no surprise to anyone, least of all me, that I feel that way.  That said, I was truly steeling myself to be as disappointed in this episode as I have been in the rest of the series to date* - the reason I didn't watch it last night was that, after four hours in the kitchen preparing food for a pot ( Read more... )

Er... what on earth is this comment form? There are 9 ways to sign in, and since I'm already signed in, I don't quite understand what the deal is.

ANYWAY. I meant to comment on your reaction to "The Impossible Astronaut," but then lack of power and internet prevented me until yesterday, when I read Mark's review of [name of episode omitted just in case you haven't heard it yet] and thought perhaps I don't have my thoughts on this season quite in order yet to fully respond to your thoughts in an intelligent way. Also seeing others' reactions really makes me think I need to revisit season five and not just because of my aforementioned desire to watch the River episodes backwards-- or in order? Her comments in TIA/DotM really confuse me because my original impression was that they meet randomly, thus requiring the use of the books to figure out what experiences they have in common. And it doesn't seem like, given what we've seen of her, it would make sense for their meetings to be as straightforward as what's backwards for one is ( ... )

One day (maybe by the time I get a proper BatGIRL icon going for myself, to boot), I will post my thoughts on The Character Of Batgirl, and I will at the same time really, properly explain why it's so important to me to think that it's possible for the Doctor to regenerate into a woman at some point. Which has nothing to do with science,* and everything to do with Storytelling's Effect On Me, but there you go.

~~ BizOp, who doesn't actually have TIME to properly explain herself but couldn't help posting a comment anyway!

P.S. I'm not sure what you mean by transgender regeneration. Explain? :)

* Although my brother told me some biology stuff just this past weekend about Why Life Forms Age that makes me think there might actually be a strong scientific case for an evolutionary *need* for Time Lords to be able to regenerate into either sex -- also, Dr. Grant's frogs. But that is another rant.

Unless you're asking something different, I'm just going to jump in to explain transsexual vs transgender regeneration: the first has to do with biology (ending up with the bits biologically associated with a sex) and the latter has to do with sociological construct (identifying as a particular gender, no matter what bits or hormones are biologically going on).

Hopefully that made sense? We had a number of ethical studies on issues surrounding transsexual and transgender folks at the hospital I interned at a couple years back (it was that long??), so it's something I've been more aware of over the past few years as an important distinction to make.

Thanks, luv! I will probably at some point have a follow-up to our telephonic conversation, but, until then, all I've got to add is that Moffat makes an excellent troll, and that macro is wonderful. I do so love having a proper male Companion about the place again, even if one of my long-time TARDIS rules has been broken (although, bunk beds! Infinite hearts to Gaiman!)

ETA: Oh, also want to add now that LJ has gone BONKERS lately. Getting the format to work on a post, even if you AREN'T using the rich text editor, is kind of like gambling against Tulio.

This signature/post-script combination is perfection, since I KNEW I needed to explain my last point, but also needed badly to get to sleep and so settled (at least in my head) for, "ENIGMATICNESS WILL EXPLAIN LATER KTHXBYE" Luckily, Mags has taken a Sociology class in the past decade and can also read my mind, so answer'd! ^_^

If not for the whole job thing, I would have already sent you a Why Gail Simone's Babs Comment Turned My Biscuits into Charcoal Briquettes (Sorry, Gail, I Love Ya, But YEAH) letter, so this is a discussion we will have. Having these disagreements to look forward to is kind of bliss *g*

A-ha! I always _knew_ it would be possible to regenerate into the other sex. Not that _every_ Time Lord will do that for one of their personal twelve regenerations, just that it's _possible_. In general. Of course my reason for wanting this is less based in deeply analyzed issues and more just "If they can change, let's see them REALLY change. Because...why _shouldn't_ they? It's still the same species after all!" but hey ( ... )
