Bullet

Don fired immediately.

He didn’t even need to think about it. It wasn’t in accordance with regulation, but the blood splattered pictures kept replaying over and over again.

The bullets left the Glock easily but they never reached the man.

Two fingers rose, effortlessly making a sweeping motion to the left. There, they embedded themselves in the cheap hotel wall.

Don swallowed thickly as the taller man gave him a wounded look.

Sylar tilted his head to the side. “Do you always shoot people you’ve just met?”

He snarled, “Only murderers who kill innocent people.”

A long bushy eyebrow rose. “Mmhhmmm… Yeah, I’m sorry about that,” a sigh. “Except I’m not.”

Don lunged forward, swinging his fist. Sylar made another motion with his hand and he felt himself frozen in mid air, body robbed of its ability to move. He was slammed backwards to the carpet and his gun was flung aside.

The brain stealer walked closer, footsteps heavy. He clicked his tongue as he leaned down on his haunches beside Don’s frozen head. “You shouldn’t fight it, Agent Eppes. It’s only evolutionary, all of this. Biologically imperative. Your brother would agree.”

Don could only watch as the index finger was crooked at his forehead. He couldn’t move, couldn’t do anything, only nothing…

Fight

The front door burst open with a forceful kick, crashing into the wall. Megan stood there, eyes alight, face fierce with her anger and determination. Her wrists rotated and red fire came to life. In an instant, she flung out her right arm, sending the flames towards the two men.

Don breathed a sigh of relief as Sylar lunged up and towards her, leaving him behind.

Sylar growled low, a smirk playing over his face. “Megan, it’s been quite a while. I thought you’d still be hiding from last time.”

Another sweep of her arm and her enemy took a step back. “You should know I don’t hide, Gabriel.”

Still stuck to the floor, Don watched as the fight played out between the two, one hero, one villain in this story with a frozen bystander.

“My name is Sylar!” He lunged forward again, hands turning blue with the freezing ability. He locked his with Megan’s and it was a terrifying dance of fire and ice.

Megan swiped at Sylar’s face, fingers dripping with her ability.

Recoiling, Sylar switched powers, falling back on his favorite and most used. The telekinesis slammed the blonde woman into the wall, holding her upright, arms tight to her sides.

Luck

“I’ll finish you off first.” The pointer finger rose again to Megan’s face as she snarled and struggled.

Surprisingly, Don found that he could move. Silent, he carefully maneuvered himself into an attacking position. There wasn’t a chance that he could beat the other man -too strong, too fast, too everything-but there was a chance he could distract him long enough for Megan to escape.

He did it quickly, going for the ankles and legs. Sylar fell sideways as Don barreled into him. A kick was aimed and he rolled away from it, hearing the thump of his success that was her falling to the floor.

She didn’t escape or run or prepare for another attack. Instead, Megan slapped her hand down, letting the fire grow and race across the hotel carpet.

Her intention was to burn it to the ground and Sylar obviously picking up on that, left them in favor of living. But not before a look that promised this wasn’t over from his dark eyes.

The flames died as she reclaimed them. They both lay panting.

Don wheezed out a thanks.

Megan's look was furious. "We got lucky."
