At any rate, do any of you know any good resources in the Seattle area? Magic shops, people who might be interested in teaching me some basic stuff, local performers to go see, etc? I'm willing to accept any ( Read more... )

I am learning card magic and perform only for our club so far. May I friend you? Perhaps we could encourage one another, share tips? This journal is new. There is not much there yet, but I shall post from time to time.

Try to stick to theory and techniques, not gimmicks.
Card College by Giobbi is a good place to start. Its five volumes, but I would suggest buying volume one and working through it from beginning to end. Also, try to do some research. I'll give you one more title to show you the rabbit hole (its up to you to commit to going into it): The Expert at the Card Table by Erdnase.

When I was 11 years old and just getting started a professional magician said, keep it simple so you can concentrate on the performance and not the finger flinging. After 30 years of walking around loaded down with gimmicks I learned the wonders of sleight of hand. That is REAL magic. So take
mthegreat's advice and learn theory, learn technique and read books. If you learn sleight of hand you will have the power to walk in cold and perform miracles with borrowed objects.

Thanks. From what I've read so far, sleight of hand and mentalism are what interest me most. But that's based on only the most preliminary reading.

For mentalism, you'll want to start with Corinda's "13 Steps."

Royal Road to Card Magic and The Amatuer Magicians Handbook are two good books to check out. Just have fun.
