Lily hoisted her rucksack higher on her shoulder as she crossed the grounds, thinking over her last few days at Hogwarts. Lord, it was such a relief to be back, to not feel different. Well, that wasn't entirely the case. It was funny how separate she felt here, from her taste in music to her clothes and the slang she used. She felt suspended, beyond.

She stopped in the middle of the sweet smelling grass and raised a hand to block out the sun. The lake was beautiful today, the Giant Squid drifting dreamily across its surface in the dying light. She'd missed this, the freedom of walking the grounds and feeling a part of the world around her.

She lowered her hand and set off toward the beech tree, where she knew Remus would be. It was his favourite spot to relax.

Remus was almost asleep when he heard twigs crunching right next to him. He startled awake with a gasp, then smiled when he recognised Lily. No one else had hair like that.

"Hi Lily. Sorry, you startled me."

Lily smiled as she plopped down beside Remus, resting her back against the rough bark of the beech tree. "Sorry," she said, nudging his shoulder. "Were you dozing?"

"Apparently I am a fifty year old man after all. Napping the middle of the day..." He grinned. "Sirius would never let me live it down." His smiled tightened for a second before he got it back under control. He had been making comments like that for years now. But they had never hurt before.
