this morning, i watched a man spray about half a tin of anti-freeze on his windscreen to clear it. ok, i know it was a bit parky first thing, but good god could he not just have scraped the thin (it was practically non-existent!!) dusting of frost off the old fashioned way ( Read more... )

Addicted to the fumes maybe? They do have that delightful perminent marker scent about them. :)

Some people have an aversion to scraping ice for some reason, I've no idea why. I hate de-icer, as it makes a mess of the paintwork.

It was minus 3C this morning here, so a fair thickness of ice - but if you start the engine, stick the heater on full, then finish a cup of tea, the ice comes off very easily with a scraper. OK, so you're running an engine for 5 minutes polluting the atmosphere, but it means the engine will be properly warmed up by the time you set off - meaning the combustion will be more efficient when it matters.

I ran the engine with the heater on for a bit - but as I park on the road, in London, I wasn't going to leave the car while I had a cup of tea. Also sloshed a warm-tap bowlful of water on the windscreen and rear screen to melt the ice so the wipers could remove it. It only needs to be about body temperature to melt the ice - and once the heater has warmed the glass a bit and the wipers have wiped it off, it doesn't refreeze. Was pretty thick on mine, though. And I don't have a scraper at the moment ...
Took a bit longer for the T-panels to defrost, of course ...

Yeah - I didn't bother doing the sunroof. Just let the icy water that had seeped past the seals drip down the back of my neck on the way to work :(

To be fair if he is using a car it generally suggests they aren't that bothered about looking after nature. I know it is the last big environmental step I need to take but unless I get a different job I do need it - after all I don't think moving 500+ leaflets by bus or bicycle is very practical. In the meantime I console myself with the fact I recycle far more than than most (incuding tetrapack and polythene letter wrappings). It doesn't make up for it but it's a start.
