That sounds like Estevana Rey's excellent "Darkest Hours". It's gen, OW, very intense, has some tear-jerking moments, and is pretty long. I highly recommend it, so long as you've set aside a long uninterrupted block of time. You'll find it on BlackRaptor. net, on the author's pages under 'R', with a link from Lady Angel's Library (lalibrary .net/m7/index .html),on the authors' pages under 'E', and on All-Ezra .com, also linking to BlackRaptor.
Nathan also does some bery fine medical fieldwork in Deannie's "Confidence and Iodide", which just went up recently on An Archive Of Our Own .org. It's the final story in her 'Many Happy Returns' series, but it can be read as a stand - alone. It's also gen, of course, OW, and seems well-researched.I highly recommend the series, which is by an author I've never seen anywhere else.

Huh, my reply was marked as spam, probably because of the link. I posted: "It sounds to me like Such Bold and Bloody Causes by Debra Hicks. I loved it so much that I once did a photomanip for it. "
