Non-bpal, non-fanfic post. Now with squirrels!

May 19, 2010 09:54

I saw a funny sight last night. There are lots of squirrels around here (which I feed, of course!). A very well-grown "teenage" squirrel was trying to nurse off his mom, and he was almost as big as she was! She kept positioning herself so he couldn't get to her, then she cuffed him - "get your own walnuts, buster! You're a big boy now!"

Hee!

Methinks that it's time for the squirrel Jerry Springer to get into production! He has his first guests.

Fun to watch the teenagers being forced to fend for themselves. It's fun to see magpies here - the kids' feathers are still dark grey and white, rather than the adult black, so they are easy to spot. Sometimes you see a groups of them foraging on the lawn, and one of the kids will suddenly stop and stand there squawking pathetically. "Mum! Mum! I'm HUNGRY! What's to eat?" After enduring minutes of this dreadful noise, one harassed parent will finally rush up, glare at the kid and shove something down its throat, then dash away - and the kid goes back to pecking around for him/herself. Teenage magpies can have you believe they are definitely Starving To Death!

Teenagers - they're more alike than different, all across the animal kingdom!

ROFL. What would you have done if they had said, "Yes, mom, please chew our food for us!"
