New Camera

I finally splashed out and bought a new digital camera in the post-Christmas sales.  It's a Panasonic Lumix DMS-FS7.  It's not the top of the Lumix range, but it's the best I could afford.  At least I got it for a lot better price than the one shown in the link. :)

There's nothing wrong with the quality of the pictures I took with my Pentax.  It's ( Read more... )

Super pics, Maewyn. I have NEVER seen a baby praying mantis. Many thanks to you and your new camera. And now, finally, at last, after seeing so many photos of its lovely blossoms, I know why the plant is called "kangaroo paw flower". They really do look just like kangaroo paws! What a picture!

That little insect was going about its business, marching all over the roof of Laurie's car when I saw it. I put the stick in front of it so that I could get a closer look, and it ran up onto my finger!

It might be one of the offspring of a very large praying mantis I saw a couple of months ago in the garden. Just look at the terrifying serrated legs on this!

Wonderful photo, Maewyn. Yes, those legs look like major grippers, like a crab's. Or a really intimidating jar top opener. :)

Or a really intimidating jar top opener.

*shudder*

It's obviously how they grip their prey (or mate in the case of a female) so they can't escape.

The insect world is quite terrifying close up, isn't it?

Congrats on the new camera, and I'm glad to see it's being made such good use of! :D ;)

The baby mantis is awesome! :Q
(It probably knows that people are more afraid of it than it could possibly be of them... ;) )

And those kangaroo paws are adorable. :D

Thank you!

That baby was boldly running around all over the roof of the car, the king/queen of its world!

See the picture of a grown-up version of the praying mantis above!

Here's a REAL kangaroo paw!

Thank you! I'm still getting used to it. It automatically focuses on the subject, but sometimes it then focuses on something in the background just as I press the shutter!

Perhaps I should read the instruction manual... :)

ooooh shiny! A new toy. :)

Which takes excellent pictures, btw. I love your close-up shots, they work extremely well.

The kangaroo paws do look like...kangaroo paws, don't they. Even with little claws!

Thank you! One of the selling points was that it takes good macro shots. I'm still playing around with it and experimenting.

They certainly do. It makes me wonder if they were first discovered when they were dry and looking more paw-like than a fresh flower!
