I finally splashed out and bought a new digital camera in the post-Christmas sales. It's a
Panasonic Lumix DMS-FS7. It's not the top of the Lumix range, but it's the best I could afford. At least I got it for a lot better price than the one shown in the link. :)

It's obviously how they grip their prey (or mate in the case of a female) so they can't escape.
The insect world is quite terrifying close up, isn't it?

That baby was boldly running around all over the roof of the car, the king/queen of its world!

They certainly do. It makes me wonder if they were first discovered when they were dry and looking more paw-like than a fresh flower!
