Summer's Here!

Jan 08, 2006 18:01

I started my latest temp job last Tuesday, and I'm happy to say it's a lot better than the last job!  It should be interesting this week, as I'm on my own (and I'll meet one of the Managers I'm to work with, who had been on leave last week).  One thing that I really like is that the office is literally only five minutes away from home.

Summer has ( Read more... )

Thank you - from someone who has no idea what a northern winter feels like. Our winters are relatively mild - the coldest minimum Perth has had is 0.1°C. I've never seen snow!

The closest I've been to snow is the substance that comes out of the freezer when I defrost it!

Yes, the world's weather is definitely changing. It's a bit scary when you think about it.

Maewyn,
Your flowers are just lovely...reminds me of our Summer here in cold old London...we have a Hibiscus "Bluebird" in our garden, and that is a really dark purpley-blue, when it flowers in the early Summer, around May/June...

Summer is always a distant memory at this time of year here !!
Yesterday, we had a brief flurry of snow, but it didn't stay longer than a few seconds before it melted ...
You'll have to visit London, one Christmas time, and maybe you will get lucky and see some snow firsthand ...

Good luck with your new job !!

I checked on a website and saw the different varieties of blue hibiscus. They are of varying shades of pale - dark purpley-blue. Mine is a "double", but many flowers on the same bush can look like a "single", with no inner petals, some have feathery petals, and others have inner petals similar to the outer ones - very strange! My plant usually begins flowering at the beginning of December, but this year, because it was cooler, the first flower came out a couple of days before Christmas.

I'd love to visit London sometime! Only Lotto could make that happen...

Ooo...they're lovely! I'm especially interested with the Hoya flowers. They look almost as if they're made from wax or plastic. We used to have the red hibiscus on our front yard. I found out that the petals work like litmus paper and change colors depending on the acidity of their environment, but I can't remember if red equals acid and blue base, or vice versa.

I think we used to have hydrangeas too, only here we call it "bunga bokor" (cup flowers)---don't ask why. My mom's were light blue (Elijah eyes blue), though, not purple, so I'm not really sure.

Thanks for sharing the piccies!

I always thought Hoya flowers looked like wax too. However, when I took this picture, and enlarged it, you can see that they almost look like they're made of velvet. It's the centres that look plastic!

I didn't know hibiscus could change colour depending on the soil acidity.

When I was young, my mother had hydrangeas (a slightly different variety to mine). They were naturally pink. She used to put pieces of rusting steel cans near the roots, and the petals would turn blue.
