As you may well imagine, the Mexican food in Great Britain is not the easiest or cheapest to get. As one may well imagine, it would be much easier to get in New Mexico. In southern New Mexico, where I have family, it isn't even Mexican food. It's just food, of the region. Calling it Mexican food would be like going to the hot dog stand at a Yankee game and calling it American food. Slightly on the redundant side. So lovely, fresh tortillas, and salsa and a superabundance of restaurants are everywhere.

But northern New Mexico. I have heard the food in Albuquerque is fantastic. Has this been your experience? Going to New Mexico for me was always a bit like going to Mexico, and a bit like going back in time. What is it like where you are? The vegetation sounds like the desert vegetation that I grew up with. In the fall, all of the dead looking trees sprout flowers. You must take photos!

J,
food in ABQ has been great. there are a few things that are different and/or cannot be found such as Persian (well there is, but none with fish or just vegetarian). most Mexican food here is New Mexican. it is different from Sonoran, but pretty delicious. a lot of enchiladas, a lot of sopapillas, A LOT of green chili (on everything, everywhere.) but the best surprise was to find wide availability of calabacitas, especially since there is little to no fish to be had. it makes it easy to not eat meat but not have to settle for cheese. and beyond New Mexican, we have found tons of just great restaurants of all types! we were not sure how limited we would be here, but there is really quite a good variety to be had.

as far as the landscape, it is high desert. we are about at 5000 ft, at the base of the Sandia mountains with a peak over 10,000'. I ahve been taking lots of pictures, but I have not been very good abotu getting them on the computer yet. as soon as we are settled into the new house, this will be my next mission.

That sounds fantastic! I haven't had a proper enchilada in years. I do miss New Mexican green chile. It seems like once a year someone would bring huge burlap bags filled with them and then a whole day would be spent with an army of family members roasting them. These would find their way into green corn tamales, caldo con queso, green chile salsa... My Mum took some she made to a tailgate party once and my Dad said that people put it on everything but the brownies.

I grew up on calibacitas. I remember seeing my Great Grandfather in New Mexico eating just a plate of them with some refried beans. He hardly had any teeth left.

I do miss the desert. Can't wait to see your photos!
