Songs Germanic

I've got two Beatles songs performed in German.  "I Want To Hold You Hand," is one of them, usually performed in Hamburg, as, "Komm gib mir deine Hand":

The only other German song I own is a great one by the Breeders, "German Studies."

I think I have the German version of, "Heroes," by David Bowie on tape, which was great.  Need to get that back.  Apparently, there are other Beatles songs in German, including, "Hey, Jude."  Why?  Because they liked to make money.

A LJ friend recommends Nena, who is still making great German songs.  She was the one who did, "99 Luftballoooons..."

And here is the point of this post... In my 1930/1940's genre, there is the song, "Bei mir bist du schön," which is a Germanised version of a Yiddish song, Bei Mir Bistu Shein. This became a smash pop hit in 1937 and then in 1938. Hitler liked it until he discovered it was Yiddish and so on. Interesting reading at WikiPedia.

Aka, "My Mere Bits of Shame"
Aka, "Buy a Beer, Mr. Shane"
Aka, "The Bear Missed the Train"

There was something going on between the USA and Germany, leading up to WW2, with this song, Marlena Dietrich, and political stuff. All them Jewish scientists flocking here so we could pretend to A-bomb Germany by A-bombing Japan. A fascinating time. I focused on the interwar period in college. Because I wanted to understand how NAZI's caught on. And I try to tell people it's happening in America. But they don't wanna know. They don't see any connexions. What good was my sheepskin, papa, if people don't wanna learn? If people just want to follow? All your money spent, papa. And boots still charge the streets. When will they ever learn?

Maybe the only lesson comes with final extinction.

You weren't so hot, after all.

And the rain falls with the blood.

music - interwar, music - german pop
