As some of you know, I was a classic Whovian Back in the Day. I wrote fanfic about Seven, my first fanfics ever. I watched all the episodes, even the telesnap reconstructions. I went to conventions. I have pictures of myself with three different Doctors (Five, Six and Seven) and various companions. I have autographs. I was in a club. That kind ( Read more... )

Vincent and the Doctor was not the best Matt Smith episode of the season, in my opinion. The first few helped me get used to him better. :)

However, Vincent and the Doctor is one of my favorite episodes of the season because of the gallery scene and Bill Nighy. ;P

Running the risk of ignorance (as I haven't actually seen series 5) but I would say BBC wants everyone to believe that Matt Smith & Eleven are universally accepted. I do not believe that to be so, and not only from the Rose/Doctor shippers out there. And for the reasons you named.

When I can Netflix S5 I will watch it and decide about 11. But he's going to have to work pretty damn hard to usurp Nine & Ten in my mind...

I'm basing my "warmly embraced by the fandom" on just what I hear around the campfire from other fans. My one remaining friend from my old Whovian days that I'm still in touch with looooves him.

I would be very curious at the relationship between David Tennant lovers who love Matt/Eleven vs. Whovians who love Matt/Eleven. I would suspect a difference.

Well I was kind of a Rose fan/shipper myself but at this point I couldn't really care less, so consider this an opinion from someone without that investment in that part of the fandom.

I'm not crazy about Eleven either. I really want to like him, and there is nothing horribly wrong with him...but there is something...off-putting about him.

I think it's because, at least through the episodes I have watched (Vincent and the Doctor is where I left off), the Doctor's dark side really hasn't shown through much. All of the Doctor's I've followed (Four was my first) have that bit of inner darkness and torment that comes through, but I'm either not sensing or not believing it in Eleven, and that makes the character kind of boring.
