I've always wished I could flip a switch and become a morning person. I worked at a movie theatre for years and also was more awake for my 5-close (1am or so) shifts than the day shifts. But then I hoped if I got a job with 'regular' hours I would adjust - alas - years of some version of 8-5 has not changed me one bit. I even suck at getting up when I have to - I'm never/rarely early to work. But I know it has to be something deeper than just routine because it doesn't matter how much sleep I get. I tell people I could go to bed at 5pm and I would still not pop out of bed at 6am. It's just not what I do...

Yeah, I've been getting up around 8 for years during the workweek and it hasn't become natural yet.

I became a morning person, in the sense that I automatically awake at about 6-7 (I usually choose to sleep in on weekends, by returning to bed after I awake). Everything I've read says that consistently waking at the same time every day will eventually retrain you (you'll end up going to bed earlier, etc.). I've at least found this to be true, though anecdote /= data...

I suspect that the low number of people admitting to being morning people is not so much due to there being small numbers in that group as it is to the stigma attached, and maybe to a lack of clear definition ( ... )

Very true. Is it just getting up naturally? Or is it getting up naturally and being happy about it? It's fuzzy.

I have this day that happens every blue moon where I can just pop out of bed at 6am (even after only 4 hours of sleep)bright eyed and bushy tailed and gung-ho for the day. Today is such a day. I don't need coffee or anything, I'm just AWAKE. I have to confess, I kinda like it. I don't have to rush off in a tizzy to work; but I really don't think I could do it everyday. If I could wake up like this everyday I'd use the time to go running and do homework and the house would be sparkling...but it just not how I am.

Left to my own devices, I'd be an "in bed at midnight, up at 7:30" kind of person. But my husband's always worked at jobs that require him to be out the door super early, so these past 20 years, I've gotten accustomed to waking up at 5:00 or 5:30. (We "sleep in" till 6:30 on weekends. Such decadence.)

I'm kind of glad my internal clock got reset this way, because I'm a lot more alert/energetic earlier in the day, and a later rising/bedtime would decrease my overall productivity. Plus, now that the kids have to be out the door at 6:40am to get to school, it's nice to be fully awake and caffeinated well in advance of the morning rush.

You are such a lazy slugabed. Sleeping in till 6:30. The lethargy! The sheer hedonism! Shaaaaaame.
