What is a morning person?pattinthehattAugust 27 2010, 14:54:40 UTC
I suspect that the low number of people admitting to being morning people is not so much due to there being small numbers in that group as it is to the stigma attached, and maybe to a lack of clear definition.
If someone finds out you're a morning person they often react as thought you're bragging or assuming a holier-than-thou attitude. Often they get defensive, even if the "morning person" hasn't said anything even remotely indicating that not being a morning person is wrong in some way. It's just one of those odd things, like if you decide you want to try to eat healthier, and suddenly friends and colleagues are just sure that you're judging them for not doing the same. I got craploads of that when I was a vegetarian, even from people who definitely should have known better.
The other issue, at least for me, is the question of what makes one a morning person. I have always been an early riser. Before I lost Kim I tended to wake up between six and seven, even on the weekends. Since her death I tend to awaken around 4 AM. In both cases there is no going back to sleep for me; I wish there was! Some people would say this tendency to wake up so early combined with the inability to go back to sleep makes me a morning person.
But "morning person" also has the connotation of being all happy and chipper the moment your eyes open. That is definitely not my case. As a rule I feel like crap when I wake up... joints kind of stiff, nausea, often headachey, and pretty much always with some level of allergy attack. So I'm not leaping out of bed the moment my eyes open, all excited to seize the day. I will say that by the time most people get up I have been awake a few hours and might appear to have that morning person energy.
