Another busy night. Painted the entryway. Hung some more pictures. One grouping without panels, one with...but skinny panels (more like stripes) so the pictures look they're hanging on ribbons. It's kewl. Cleaned and straightened the den ( Read more... )

7. Don't buy disposable paint trays. They're too flimsy. Buy a stiff plastic one and rinse it out, letting any paint on it dry completely before you re-use it. So buy three or four of them.

You could also buy just one stiff plastic one and then buy a few disposable ones to set over the top of the stiff one. This way, you have the sturdiness of the hard plastic but don't have to worry about cleaning out the tray. All you would have to do is tape them together so the disposable tray doesn't go flying when you start using the roller.

my mother has had the same roller tray for longer than ive been alive. she puts the tray inside a plastic grocery bag, and puts the paint on the bag. then there's no washing whatever, you just turn the bag inside out off the tray and pitch it. and we have one of theose paint sticks, where you suck up paint into the handle and push in the plunger as you paint to keep the roller loaded. you do need drop cloths tho, until you get the hang of it.

Oooh, I could really have used tip no. 5 when fixing up our current flat. I'll have to remember that for next time. Thanks :-)

Lori, Check out the Ikea web site for wall shelves. We got a great 2 shelf unit from them for videos and DVDs last fall. It can either be screwed into the wall or put on the floor as a low bookshelf.

As an addendum to the above comment, I'd totally be up for a road trip to Ikea at some point soon (how far is it to Pittsburgh? Like 3 hours?). I'd like to find some shelves like that for my bedroom.

Area rugs are *so* expensive. Anywhere you look - even Ikea. Maybe we should look for a cute runner for the table instead?

The disposable paint trays are meant to go inside the metal or heavyduty plastic trays. They really do make cleanup much, much easier.
