Oscar Predictions from the Movie Geek

Dec 13, 2005 18:04

I'm such a movie geek. Gah.

Now that the Golden Globe nominations are in and bunches of critic's circles and such have named their best films of the year, I'm ready to make my early predictions about what five films will be our Best Picture nominees.

Drum roll, please.

I predict that the nominees will be:

King Kong ( Read more... )

movies: oscars

Well, I think for Best Supporting Actress, I would say that Gong Li from Memoirs of a Geisha will most definitely be nominated, she is a phenomenal actress, just very unknown in the US. Also, same with Zhiyi Zhang, even though I think she should ask Gong Li tips for the acting area, will most likely garner a nomination in the Best Actress category, although I think Reese Witherspoon should win that one.

As for Best Supporting Actor, I think Alexander Siddig from Syrianna may make an appearence for it.

Was King Kong really that good? From its previews I thought it looked like a very strange cross between Jurassic Park and Titanic and Lord of the Rings.

I hope Brokeback Mountain wins...just because it's an Ang Lee film and it's got Heath in it and it's about gay cowboys. :D :D :D

I have yet to see it because it's not playing in my area. *grumbles*

King Kong is getting orgasmically good reviews. Many of the reviewers have said that they were SHOCKED at how good it was.

And don't despair. Unless you live near one of the grand total of FIVE theaters playing BBM at the moment, you're among the rest of us still waiting. It expands to 16 large markets this Friday. It probably won't get its general wide release until January. Given the critical acclaim, the giant per-screen average and the overall buzz, smart money says it'll get the same kind of release that any drama would get.

That's what I was thinking...but when I checked movieticket.com, it's not playing in my area at all through February. Or maybe the schedule is just being stupid right now, and will change later.

Hopefully it'll come out on DVD very quickly, and then I can preorder it and watch it three times in a row the day the DVD arrives on my doorstep. XD

Don't trust that, either. I didn't get any results for Columbus either, and I KNOW it's coming here at least by early January. The problem is that the distributors control this process and at this point, they don't even know what's going on. I talked with a woman at our local indie-theater chain and she said that it's all up in the air at this point.

I'd be surprised if A History of Violence was nominated. It got good reviews, but I havent' heard any talk suggesting that it deserves noms.

On the other hand...you didn't even mention Crash, which, while it was out early this year and is already on video, was NOT eligable for last year's awards. I'd be VERY shocked if Crash wasn't nominated. That movie was brilliant, moving, and about as tight as a movie can be. It's everything an Oscar movie should be.

I don't know, it's popping up on a lot of Best-Of-05 lists, and Viggo's turned up on a fair number of Best Actor award lists.

But Crash is also a strong contender. I forgot to mention it.
