Oscar Predictions from the Movie Geek

Dec 13, 2005 18:04

I'm such a movie geek. Gah.

Now that the Golden Globe nominations are in and bunches of critic's circles and such have named their best films of the year, I'm ready to make my early predictions about what five films will be our Best Picture nominees.

Drum roll, please.

I predict that the nominees will be:

King Kong
Brokeback Mountain
Good Night and Good Luck
A History of Violence
Walk the Line

It's that last one I'm the least certain of. It could also be Capote. Or possibly Match Point. KK is also iffy...the advance reviews are stellar, and if it were five years ago I'd be less sure, but with the LotR films' Academy success one can be a lot less certain that Academy voters won't honor genre or effects-heavy films. I'm about 80% sure it'll be on there. I think BBM, GN and GL and AHoV are locks, especially BBM, which just pulled in the most nominations for the Globes. In fact, it's looking like BBM will be the Best Picture frontrunner. The only film I can see giving it serious competition is King Kong. I also suspect that the Academy may wish to reward the movie for being...well, what it is. We could also get a surprise nomination for Pride & Prejudice. A lot of critics are putting "The 40 Year Old Virgin" on their best-of lists, and while I agree, I just can't see the Academy choosing to honor it given that they don't usually give cred to comedies, which is another topic altogether.

The Best Actor race will be interesting. Philip Seymour Hoffman is raking in the accolades for Capote, but critics are having shocked orgasms over Heath Ledger. I think it'll be between those two. Viggo and George Clooney will probably turn up on the nomination list, too.
