The building inspector just drove up to our house, then did a U-turn and tore off. From the time I heard him pull up, to the time I walked to the window (in time to see him pulling the u-turn) was about 15 seconds. I laughed about it with Laura, and said in his defense it was snowing lightly

I once got a permit to reroof a rental I had. I finished and called for the inspection. Then I waited around and waited around until the inspector finally showed up. I told him there was a ladder in place around the back. He looked at me with great distain, saying, "You don't think I actually go up on the roof, do you?" I never bothered getting a permit for anything after that.

I've heard of some inspectors who know a given contractors work and know it's up to snuff and sign off on knowing who did the work without looking.
