Good and Bad Maternity Care Experiences

Oct 30, 2009 08:09

It's coming up on that time of year when I get to choose my health plan, and really, our biggest medical event in the next 3 years in is likely to be getting knocked up.

What sort of experiences have folks had at the various hospitals (or non-hospital settings) around town when it comes to bringing a little one into the world...?

children, doctors, insurance

I had my little girl at St. Mary's early this year. I had an amazing experience there. The nurses were so helpful and supportive. My plan was to have a natural, medication-free birth, and I didn't have to fight them on it at all. The only complaint I had was regarding the doctor on call, but thankfully I didn't have to see him much.

Feel free to message me if you have any specific questions!

I also gave birth at St Mary's this year. I had a really good experience. On the tour the L&D nurses seemed really dedicated to non-medicated births. Mine was non-medicated, but that had more to do with my labor than with the setting.
I do remember the tour nurse saying that Dean patients would see the OB on call. As a GHC patient I was almost 100% guaranteed that I'd see my own family practice doctor.

I can't say anything about my birth experience yet because I'm 17 weeks pregnant. But I'm really happy with our coverage through Dean Health, the plan we have there is no out of pocket expenses, the pregnancy and birth are covered 100%. And all the people I know that have given birth at St Mary's have positive things to say, this is where I will be giving birth. I decided to go with a family practice instead of Dean OBs and so far I'm very happy with them (Wildwood Family Clinic).

Do you have recommendations for a particular pregnancy care doctor at Wildwood? I am insured through Dean (21 weeks pregnant) and thinking of switching doctors to one at Wildwood.

I'm seeing Dr Robert Cambray. So far he's pretty awesome. I'm very pro-natural and he seems to be as well. My doula has actually worked with him in the past and had nothing but good things to say about him.

I've birthed at meriter and st mary's, and my experience at st mary's was much better than at meriter. some of tht was because I was induced for my labor at meriter, so obviously there were differences due to that, but I generally was listened to better at st mary's. Meriter's l&d nurses didn't believe my labor had progressed as fast as it had, and my friend had to go yell at them about how my mom birted me in a hallway because she went so fast. so there was rushing to delivery from where they induced me when they finally believed me, and being moved during transition, which was frantic. I did have the best post delivery baby nurse at meriter, but birthing at st mary's was much more comfortable.

St. Mary's & Meriter are pretty much the only birthing hospitals. All GHC folks go to St. Mary's; GHC doesn't cover midwives' care.

However there are far more Dr. visits vs. those few days in the hospital, important as that is, of course!

I like my Dr. (Ederer @ GHC) and had a positive birth experience @ St. Mary's. My birth plan was respected.
