I'm on a Thai tangent, so Muay thai..

Several people on my friends list have taken muay thai or shown intrest in learning it. Well, muay thai is a style that is not for most people. To learn muay thai, there is a lot of pain involved. If you don't hurt while training muay thai you are probably not training muay thai..just some watered down wanna be version. It is not pretty, it is not ( Read more... )

Nothing will make you tougher than Muay Thai, IMHO. The problem, of course, is that most people don't want to make that leap. I've been taking it for the past 3 years along with everything else. There is no shape like Muay Thai shape, seriously. Last year when we were training hard I was walking around at single digit bodyfat numbers with destruction on the mind at all times. My (then) fiancee was less than happy with me....

yup yup, it does take a toll on the body though. Most kickboxers in thailand retire in their early 20's because their bodys can't take the abuse. Many of them start fighting in china, japan and other places and clean up. They just can't keep up in thailand being "old men" of 25 or so.

Dude, I know. I don't do it year round, only 3-4 months every year. The rest of the time is boxing and BJJ, among other things.

when muay thai meets tae kwon do... hedonistpoet May 4 2008, 06:08:03 UTC

Totally an unfair example.

The TKD fighter was both tactically and strategically doing stupid shit. Why on earth did he try to pull ANY of those spin kicks? Where were his side kicks when the Muay Thai fighter advanced? How come many of the kicks he threw had him off-balance or CAUGHT by his opponent?

I respect the hell out of MT, but putting up that video was putting up a straw man. It is similarly unfair as putting up the following as an example of TKD >> MT:

The skill of the combatants, when grossly out of whack, will produce a seeming stylistic victor, certainly. When I've seen skilled TKD and MT fighters fight, it usually ends in the MT favor because of shin-to-shin repetition.

Sorry to quibble. I just thought your example quite uncharacteristic of how I've seen things go down.

Actually the example I posted is much closer to reality. They combatants actually used rules that favored the TKD side of the house ( ... )
