Aggs, bicycles, other crap

On the strident, shrieking, bitter and derisive recommendation of a damnportlanders poster several days ago ("real egg yolks are ORANGE!"), I went to my local farmer's market yesterday to buy some organic farm fresh eggs. $4 for half a dozen! Yeah, tastier than cheap grocery store eggs, but not orange and not dramatic enough to justify the vast amount of sand ( Read more... )

When I was over in Italy, I freaked out at first, because the eggs were fairly orange. Apparently their chickens there are free range. After awhile, the eggs started looking normal to me.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. If the chickens are eating bugs and such, it makes sense that their eggs would have a stronger flavor. The ones I bought were certainly oranger, but not omg orange. I think I'll start being on the lookout for eggs from chickens owned by super-hippies.

Ohay, awesome. Thanks! My brain must still be marking you as "out east somewhere," as I completely forgot about you when I was trying to figure out if I had any friends up in Seattle.

Between then and now, though, it turned out that I know some folks from the SF Bay Area who are going to Penny Arcade con, and who have offered to share their hotel room. I'm about 85% sure I'll be heading up there to meet up with them. But totally, thanks again.

Funny to see how adamant some people get about things like that.

Yeah, balancing uility and affordability with weight can be hard for biking. capybyra August 9 2009, 22:45:40 UTC
I used to have a "Drugstore delivery bike" it was a Schwinn framed trike with enough basket space to stash two army footlockers worth of cubic. Having the two army footlockers lashed on the top of the rear main basket made it an odd looking ride for bike solo camping. But pacing one's self to compensate for combined everything mass can make a different experience of riding:) Kettle Moraine in Wisc was toured by me that way a few times in my late teens. I cheated once and had a friend with pickup truck take me across the "valley" instead of riding the 90mumble miles long around as the route of 1980something was... But back to the army gear Vs wirebasket trades- consider a even more low tech/low buck trade. Wire racks from fridges shelves & 20 inch apartment stoves can provide raw metal for custom crafting basketing. Reverse engineer the ones you are contemplating dropping $$ over and make it yourself... Use the money saved to buy that ticket a bit earlier. As for bags? I find thrift stores often have waterproof lined bags sold as ( ... )

Thanks a bunch. I did the fridge rack thing on the back of a scooter once. It worked pretty well, but there were rust issues. I know I'm not guaranteed against that with the Wald rack--I've seen either that brand or a knockoff brand on several bikes with rust spots on the racks. Those were always the chromed ones, though; never have seen rusty painted ones. But anyway, I think I will end up going for the Wald rack. It really is cheap for what you get (if it were $35 for one, I'd reconsider, but it's that price for a pair). From what I hear, I will have to spend time applying different fasteners for them, like self-locking nuts and zip-ties.

Regarding bags, I'll check out that option you mentioned. I like cheap waterproof. But, unfortunately, I'm also susceptible to style concerns. Target has some good diaper bags, I seem to remember. Before I pulled my REI messenger bag out of the bargain used bin at Next Adventure sporting goods, and cleaned out the mildew and melted Halls, I was eyeing one for an everyday carry bag.

Much better than anything I've seen yet! There was one model at a shop here that had backpack straps, but they were thin and veeery poorly designed.
