To me, the pilot made it obvious from the get go that Sam hated Halloween simply because it reminded him of everything he was trying to get away from.

Yes - his life was Halloween, and he wanted to get away from that. But I guess everyone interprets it differently, and then Jess died which would also affect things. I just wasn't fond of the barf story as the reasoning and preferred the hints we got in earlier seasons. Thanks for stopping by :)

I hated it. It was completely unnecessary pointless and nonsensical retcon. It made no sense that Dean would even ask the question. It's more of a mystery why Dean wouldn't hate Halloween, too, since it was practically the anniversary of his mother's death as well as Jessica's. And simply seeing kids running around dressed as the monsters they hunt every week ought to be distasteful to both of them.

I just . . .

Why? WTF was show thinking? What possible purpose did this story serve and why did any of the writing team think it would be a good idea to include it? I can't imagine how it actually got to screen without anyone in the production team calling bullshit. Frankly, it's the stupidest piece of retcon the show has ever done.

I've heard a few people say that maybe Sam is offering Dean a self-depreciating story to sort of cheer him up a bit, as teasing fodder I suppose? I mean he did chose the Thundercat case for Dean to cheer him up and get him out of the bunker. So maybe...

We all know Dean like pop culture, and I can see him enjoying these movies, knowing that the baddy will always lose. But yes, it's just a bit odd. But I did enjoy the rest of the episode, and I hope we get some more MOTW ones!!! Take care :)

Aw, this is lovely. I'm pleased Sam felt he could open up and tell Jess the truth - well, some of the truth, anyway.

I thought Sam's halloween story was a little strange, but I like the reasoning others have given that he was telling a story to make Dean feel better.

I like that reasoning too; he's trying to cheer Dean up with a story he know he'll appreciate, just like he did with the hunt. Thank you for reading and commenting. Take care :)

Thank you! Personally I think they've already set up Sam's reasons for hating Halloween, so I wasn't a fan of the barf story. But a few people have suggested that Sam's trying again to cheer Dean up, so I'll take that. Thank you for stopping by :)

Yes, your take makes loads more sense. In a great ep otherwise, that story had me going, "Whuuuu--the hell was that?"

Yes, I really enjoyed the episode as a whole too, but like you say I stumbled a bit on this part, because I always thought it was quite clear why Sam hated Halloween. Thank you for stopping by :)

His mother and girlfriend's death should be enough reason to hate Halloween. It's also when he was given demon blood by Azazel.

Yes! There's so many reasons why he would hate Halloween, and while I appreciate the nod to past seasons, I think the hints we got on screen were reason enough for him to hate it. Thank you for taking the time to read and comment, it's always lovely to hear from you. Take care :)

Exactly. The things we already knew were more than enough. I'm surprised that the show didn't acknowledge this. Aww, you're very welcome. I'm sorry I've missed so many of your wonderful drabbles. I'll be catching on more of them. You take care, too. :)
