I'm thrilled you picked up on all the little dark hints of what looms ahead. And yes, of course I simply had to get Dean in there somewhere, because Sam must have had something else to remind him of his family, other than the photograph.

I really wanted the tarot cards to tell little stories about Jess and her relationship with Sam, as well as hinting at what lies ahead. And I love writing Jess POV, I find her fascinating in so many ways, especially as we know so little about her from canon; it's always fun to flesh her out a little bit more.
