I think this is all the proof I need to declare Finnish an amazing language! I wish Norwegian had a word like that.

My cats aren't very lapcatty, so it's kind of a rare privilege when they settle down properly.

Finnish is not my first language, and a lot of the time I feel pretty divorced from Finnish culture in general, but every now and then I have these bursts of oh man, this is so great. The word is avanto, by the way.

I know people who cut holes in the ice to fish in the lake, but not to swim in it. Is there a different word for a hole cut for the purpose of ice-fishing? If so, that makes Finnish even more awesome.

That type of fishing is called pilkki, and the hole for it would be either an avanto or a pilkkireikä. (Reikä=hole.) The bigger the hole the more natural avanto sounds.

Man, I haven't gone winter-swimming since I was about twelve. I've turned into such a wuss. (There's also rolling around naked in the snow, for when there isn't a lake or a hole in the ice.)

(Obviously a sauna is required for either activity.)

I've heard about the blocking before - apparently my LJ is blocked for adult content. Because we all know I'm all about the raunchy pr0ns, right?
