Can't you get the update from somewhere other than verizon or find a mod that will work or something?

I really need to root my Eris. I want to do exactly what you did and even more.

Well, it turned out the update did not do anything bad, and then it did not matter because Picard has retired and now is in the ownership of my girlfriend. Rooting is generally easy.
