I get muscle spasms in my back a lot. It mostly comes from sitting at my desk in front of a computer most of the day. Exercise helps me a lot, and I started doing yoga for my back, which really helps relax and stretch out my back muscles, easing the pain.
I have seen my doctor about the issue. He was a football (soccer) team physician in the UK before he moved here. He's given me some "real" muscle relaxers if a cramp gets really bad/painful. It does help to go see your doctor. :o)
