Daiki's POV
"Senpai." someone called and I reflexively looked back. For a moment, I expected seeing her, but of course, it wasn't her. It was actually just Miki and the other boys, waving at me in greeting. I waved back and shouted, "Congratulations on graduating!"
I was in Horikoshi graduation, of course it's not her.
But seriously, 'senpai' have had a different meaning to me since I met her.
I first met her two years ago.
I first noticed the pocky.
Not that I'm obsessed to pocky or anything but at the moment, I was really tired and hungry. I'm on my way back home, just after work. I wanted to arrive home early so I didn't make my usual detour to the konbi.
I recognized her when she took a bite of her favorite strawberry flavored pocky.
I think I gaped at her. I was just too stunned.
It was Mano Erina, sitting across me in the train.
I stared at her, unbelieving.
I don't have a crush on her or anything (no, I am not in denial) but when I saw her there, box of pocky in her hand and silently munching on a piece, I just had this weird feeling in my chest.
I suddenly remembered her
pocky drama. I only watched it out of curiousity, and I didn't even know who were the cast, but Mano Erina's last scene... The one where she said "Because I will always love you." and then she bit onto a pocky stick.
It sort of have an impact on me. My heart suddenly went doki doki.
Suddenly our eyes met. Oh God, she caught me staring. This is so embarrassing. I'm sure I blushed.
But then she silently giggled and my brain went blank.
She's too cute.
She smiled at me then she raised the hand with the box of pocky, silently offering me some.
I smiled at that, stood up and went to sit next to her, helping myself with a piece of pocky.
She giggled again and I smiled sheepishly at her. She must have heard that I like pocky.
And after that, we met more and more. Only coincidentally, of course. It seems we go home at generally the same time and we always ride the same train.
During those rides, we would sit together whenever we can, and have friendly conversations, ones usual to acquiantances. We got along very well.
Then coincidental meetings became planned. We became closer, so we set up time to meet at the train station so we could go home together as friends would. For one, it is boring on train when you don't have anyone to talk to. For another, we usually go home very late and it's not good for a girl, much less an idol, like her to go home alone. Sometimes we even go to the konbi for a quick dinner together.
She started calling me "senpai" the first time we talked.
"Because you're my senpai when it comes to being an idol. Or even just being in the entertainment world." She had reasoned to me. I don't really get it, though. I argued that he should just call me by my name since I just call her 'Mano-chan.' I argued she is, in reality, older than me (four days count) and work-wise, even if she say I am the first to enter the industry, she have so much work done than me (being a soloist like her).
She wouldn't listen though and continued on calling me 'senpai.'
In time, I just learned to accept that and get used to it, though still, I wish she would just call me 'Daiki.'
-
"I could teach you, if you like." She had said one time when I told her about BEST asking Inoo-chan to teach us piano. I had complained to her that Inoo couldn't teach me properly because Takaki, Hikaru and Yabu kept on nagging the guy as well.
Surprised but ecstatic that she offered I said, "You would?! When can we start??"
She giggled then and we set a schedule for piano lessons.
It was hard to find a day where both of us were free but we managed, somehow. She was a far better teacher than Inoo and I learned faster even with our rare meetings. I started calling her 'sensei' then but she didn't like it much.
"Then let's make a deal, I won't call you sensei if you won't call me senpai." I told her. "Honestly, just call me Daiki." I said emphatically.
"But it's become a habbit now. It's sort of my nickname to you now." She said.
I could only sigh. I can never win against her. Seriously, when it comes to senpai-kohai relationship, I am most likely the kohai who never disobey her every wish.
-
"I heard your song. 'Time,' right? It's very sweet." I was taken in surprise when she told me.
"You heard that, huh?" I said, scratching my head. I was a bit embarrased.
"Un. It's a great song. It's my favorite among all JUMP songs." She said, beaming at me.
"Thank you." I told her sheepishly. I can feel my face heating up. "Takaki really worked hard on the lyrics." I told her.
"Lyrics is one thing, but the music is the one that makes the impression." She said. "I really love it."
"Stop that, you're only doing that to make me embarrassed!" I told her, catching her smirk.
She laughed. "You're so cute." She said, pinching my cheeks.
Nope, we definitely don't have senpai-kohai relationship.
"I wish we could make one, too. That'll be great, ne?" She suddenly said.
I looked at her. She was smiling, a bit sadly. And there was something more in her eyes, but I couldn't put my finger on it.
"We can make a song, if you'd like you know. It can be just between us." I told her.
"Yeah... that'd be great." She said, smiling my favorite smile again. "Let's do that, Dai--" I looked at her, astonished. She too, looked surprised. But the moment passed. "Let's do that, senpai." She said, smiling at me.
I didn't know what to make of it.
-
It during just this winter when everything became clear to me.
We went home together, just as usual. But today, she looked very exhausted. She still smiled when she saw me, but I think it was a bit forced. She looked a little pale, too.
"Are you okay?" I asked her.
"Just a bit tired." She said, smiling feebly. "But it's okay. It's my off tomorrow, so I'll be fine." She said. I knew she didn't want me to worry so I just nodded.
"By the way, I've already finished the music for our song!" She suddenly said, taking something from her bag. A memory card.
"All that's left is your lyrics, senpai." She said, beaming.
I took the card and sighed. "I'll try my best." I told her.
We sat next to each other on the train. She must have been more tired than she let out because once the train started moving, she had fallen asleep. Her head kept swaying so gently, I leaned her head on my shoulder. It was a quick ride and soon I had to wake her up because it was already her stop. She looked surprised when she woke up next to me, but she thanked me with a smile.
She stood up, looking still a little dizzy, but she managed to get off the train without swaying. She waved at me as the train moved again. I waved back, feeling something had shifted.
But after that we weren't able to see each other for a long time.
It was already February when we next see each other. One smile and it dawned on me how much I missed her.
As usual, we board the train together and walked next to each other.
There was something different about her. She seemed... reserved, somehow,
I started talking about the things that happened. I usually talked a lot during our train ride. She just smiled and listen as she used to.
"How about you? Something happened recently?" I asked her after my story.
She shrugged and said, "My manager's kinda becoming paranoid." She said softly, not looking at me.
"Eh? Why?" I asked her, not knowing what to make of this.
"There was a papapic supposedly of me and a guy... on the train." She said, barely audible.
I looked at her, not knowing what to say.
"Well, it was blurry and dark so it doesn't really say anything." She continued to say.
"But then..." I try to say, but didn't really know how to continue.
She shrugged once more. "I just told her it wasn't me... though the guy looks a bit like... my senpai."
And I realized then why she calls me senpai.
It was a boundary. It was a reminder.
A reminder that we're in the industry; that we're idol.
A reminder that just now, it can't be.
-
"You'll be leaving for Hong Kong, tomorrow right?" She asked as we board the train.
"Un." I nodded.
"Gambatte." She said. I smiled and nodded once more.
"By the way, I've finished the song. And I also recorded it, with your music." I told her a little abashed, as we sat.
"Really??" She beamed. "Can I hear it now?"
I only nodded, feeling my face heat up. I took out my earphones and my smartphone. I gave her one of the earpiece and wore the other one.
I pressed play and we listened.
(play the song~ XD)

mp3skull.com "A love song?" She asked, laughing a bit.
"Yeah." I said. I imagined my face going redder by the second.
We listened quietly as the train moved.
If I walk, would you run?
If I stop, would you come?
If I say you're the one, would you believe me?
If I ask you to stay, would you show me the way?
Tell me what to say so you don't leave me.
The world is catching up to you
While you're running away to chase your dream
It's time for us to make a move cause we are asking one another to change
And maybe I'm not ready
But I'll try for your love
I can hide up above
I will try for your love
We've been hiding enough
If I sing you a song, would you sing along?
Or wait till I'm gone, oh how we push and pull
If I give you my heart would you just play the part
Or tell me it's the start of something beautiful.
Am I catching up to you?
While your running away to chase your dreams
It's time for us to face the truth cause we are coming to each other to change
And maybe I'm not ready
But I'll try for your love
I can hide up above
I will try for your love
We've been hiding enough
I will try for your love
I can hide up above
If I walk would you run
If I stop would you come
If I say you're the one would you believe me
When the song was finished, she smiled at me sadly.
"That was beautiful, senpai."
She knows, though... and I know...
It's still not time.
Thanks for reading~ :DD
