Is it your primary computer, or do you have a desktop? Do you have an external drive for stuff that takes up a ton of space? If you don't need a whole hell of a lot of storage, I'd give SSDs a serious look. It'll be like a whole new computer.
I agree with above comment - it depends on what do you do with your Mac. For working with video (yes, some people work with video on laptops) you should look for high RPM disks. If you use it away from power outlets, solid state storage is highly recommended. Also good if you tend to bump it a lot. If you tend to keep many photographs, videos and music (but don't edit them) then just go for something of high capacity, speed is irrelevant.
I just gave you some ideas of typical usage, but you have to decide for yourself.
Pick a brand/model/line of hard drives, and I promise you you'll find someone who will never use that item again because they've had trouble with them. There's always a chance of a DOA, or an early failure, of any drive. buy something that fits your needs and budget, and buy the fastest drive you can afford, keep the receipt/etc for warranty purposes, keep a backup, and keep your fingers crossed, that's really all you can do
