Warning Wanking

Jun 25, 2009 23:20

I confess I have not been online much, have been only marginally fannish for a long time, but I am a fanfic author of some renown in my small, dying fandom.  The oar I have to put in these roiling waters is that, IMO, the problem with the dialogue is that it is a Debate, not a discussion.  A discussion includes listening as well as talking, ( Read more... )

and that is what I love about you - you keep a cool head everywhere!!!!
I've been following this latest thing and - you are right: it's a debate, not a discussion and that's what makes it so difficult participating (for me, at least).

And I agree with you about the warnings. The ones you mentioned are the ones that people should warn about. But there should be a line because, warnings shouldn't give away the twists of a story - especially if they are plot-related...

oh! and it's really nice to see you post :):)
*hugs*

*squeezes back* :)

I remember how strongly I felt about *not* giving a laundry list of warnings at one point, so I can see both points of view. It's sad and reflects badly on anyone who turns the "discussion" on its head and starts tossing ludicrous and insulting accusations about the "privilege" of victims. It sounds waaay to much like the ugly debates about race and gender discrimination.

I think the "privilege" gun is being aimed at writers more than readers. But yes, the same language and tactics and scrambling for the high ground and accusations and finger-wagging are taking place here. That's what bothers me the most about this round.

This is pretty much where I've been sitting on it. I've been more than averagely appalled at some of the really vicious uncaring "your mental problems are because you haven't sucked it up and dealt" responses I've seen from various people.

There are insensitive, emotion-blind people no matter where you go. I'm sure these are the same people who, a generation ago, would argue that members of an entire race (and gender) who have been (and continue to be) discriminated against economically, politically and educationally since the formation of the country, ought to just "suck it up" and go to college and get a job!! :/

See my answer to lastrega above.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. I also think such people are usually incapable of empathy, so debating them on the topic is an exercise in painful futility.

i am a part of the "fandom community" as much as i am part of the "human community" and as such i think the people in darfur and iran and zimbabwe have it a teeny weeny bit worse than rich americans crying about their mental problems. sorry.

Because there are great tragedies in the world doesn't make inaction to avoid hurt you *can* prevent acceptable.
